Guide Overview
Civil District Courts hear all family and civil law issues including divorce cases, custody issues, child abuse and neglect (involving the Department of Family and Protective Services, or CPS) cases, cases involving title to land, and civil matters where the amount of money or damages involved is $200 or more.
The 58th, 60th, 136th, and 172nd District Courts handle all civil cases. The 279th and 317th District Courts handle all family law and juvenile cases.
This guide contains information on all the District Courts, Associate Courts, and the Jefferson County Child Support (IV-D) Court.

All motions must include a Certificate of Conference stating you made an effort to resolve the motion with all other parties and lawyers before filing.

To schedule a hearing, contact the court coordinator by phone or email. Hearings are held throughout the week between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., subject to the court’s availability. If the Court is in trial, hearings are conducted between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Cases are typically allowed 15 minutes per hearing, if more time is needed, you must notify the court coordinator when scheduling the hearing.
