In 2012, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) asked the Social Security Administration (SSA) to study “the availability and effects of considering more fully assistive devices and workplace accommodations in its disability determinations.”  In response, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a committee of relevant experts to provide an analysis of selected assistive products and technologies, including wheeled and seated mobility devices (WSMDs), upper-extremity prostheses (UEPs), and products and technologies selected by the committee that pertain to hearing and to communication and speech in adults. The resulting publication provides comprehensive information about these assistive technology items and identifies possible funding sources. Typical barriers to funding are also discussed, along with suggested strategies for challenging these barriers.
