Medical-Legal Partnerships - TLSC
Partner Overview
The Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) team at Texas Legal Services Center (TLSC) partners with Texas healthcare providers to offer free legal services to address the health-harming legal needs of patients. TLSC MLP attorneys work on-site as “lawyers in residence” in the healthcare setting, providing legal services to patients, participating in clinical meetings, and providing legal trainings to healthcare clinicians and staff.
The TLSC MLP Team focuses on many areas of practice, including:
- Appeals for denials of public benefits such as food stamps and social security benefits.
- Advanced directives and elder law issues.
- Housing stability, including enforcement of tenants’ rights;
- Legal status such as name and gender marker changes and adoption assistance; and
- Advice, counsel, and referral information for various other legal matters.
All legal representation is provided at no cost to patients of the MLP's partnering healthcare providers. MLPs improve healthcare outcomes for healthcare providers and their patients, and, with the help of TLSC and the legal aid network of Texas, can help lift clients out of poverty and other challenging situations. Please see the data supporting this on the website for the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnerships.
