COVID-19 Changes: The health and safety of the public, our employees, and our volunteers is of paramount importance to Houston Volunteer Lawyers. HVL attorneys and staff are currently working remotely to continue serving the public. Our phone line, (713) 228-0735, will be answered from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. At this time, the HVL office is not accepting in-person visitors.
Pro Se Assistance: The Law Library and Courthouse Booth pro se assistance in-person visits will be conducted virtually. Those seeking assistance should call 713-228-0734. You will then be directed to a voicemail. Monday – Friday except for holidays. 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. First come, first served.
The self-help center can and does assist pro se litigants in filling out forms and if necessary providing appropriate referrals. This service is primarily for family law cases.
Pro se litigants are people who go through the court system without an attorney representing them.
The center is staffed by a licensed attorney.
To be eligible for services, you must:
(1) reside in Harris County,
(2) have a household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, and
(3) have limited assets.
This is an "in-person" service. Help is NOT provided over the phone.
